How does the badge know when I last shipped?

It reads your changelog page, finds the feed the page announces — or one at /feed, /rss, /rss.xml or /atom.xml — and takes the date of the newest entry. It checks again at most once every 6 hours, so the badge keeps itself up to date without you doing anything.

It says "no feed found". Why?

The page announces no RSS or Atom feed and none was found at the usual paths, or the address could not be read at all. Add a feed and the badge will find it within an hour. The Changelog Grader on this site shows exactly what was and was not found at an address.

Does it work with any changelog tool?

Yes, with any public changelog that has an RSS or Atom feed, whatever publishes it. You can also give the address of the feed itself.

How it works

The badge is an image. Whoever looks at the page it is on fetches it from this site, which reads your changelog's feed and answers with the date of the newest entry.
An answer is kept for 6 hours, so a busy README costs your server one request in that time, not one per reader.
Green means shipped within a fortnight, amber within about six weeks, grey longer than that.
It reads only public pages, through the same guarded fetcher as everything else on this site, and never anything on a private network.
